Guide for Contemporary Pilgrims

Jubilee 2025
in Rome

an occasion of profound spirituality

In 2025, Rome is preparing to welcome millions of pilgrims from around the world to celebrate the Jubilee, an event of global significance.
Established in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII, the Jubilee represents a moment of forgiveness, reflection, and renewal of faith.
The Eternal City will be the beating heart of this event, with religious celebrations, special openings of the holy doors, and cultural initiatives, all aimed at making the experience unique for believers and visitors alike.
The logistical and organizational challenges are immense, but Rome is preparing to face them, with infrastructure, security, and hospitality projects in advanced stages.

The Jubilee 2025 will not only be a time of deep spirituality but also an opportunity to boost tourism and the economy of Italy’s capital.

Rome renews itself with PNRR funds

Thanks to the funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the Capital will be at the center of a series of interventions aimed at improving accessibility, mobility, hospitality, and urban decorum, transforming public spaces, infrastructures, and peripheral areas. These ambitious projects will not only make Rome more modern and sustainable but also prepare it to become a symbol of inclusion and hospitality for the entire world.

There are four main areas:

Requalification and enhancement
Focus on extraordinary maintenance of jubilee sites and public spaces, both in the city center and the suburbs. Interventions on the central archaeological area, the Tiber riverbanks, and urban lighting, with particular attention to basilicas and pilgrim routes.

Accessibility and mobility
Strengthening infrastructures to make public and private transport more efficient. New buses, trains, metro maintenance, and the development of bike lanes and pedestrian areas are planned.

Hospitality and participation
Reinforcement of accommodation facilities, with the creation of a youth hostel and the expansion of services for pilgrims and vulnerable people. Events and initiatives will involve citizens in the various municipalities.

Environment and territory
Requalification of the Tiber, creation of new parks and nature reserves, tree planting, and improvement of urban decorum.

Cammini giubilari dentro Roma

The four papal Basilicas in Rome are St. Peter’s in the Vatican, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. These are the “major” churches with Holy Doors, which are opened by the Pope during the Jubilee year.

The pilgrimage to the Seven Churches, conceived by St. Philip Neri in the 16th century, is one of the oldest Roman traditions. It covers approximately 25 kilometers, winding through the entire city, reaching the Roman countryside, the catacombs, and some of the most magnificent basilicas of Rome.

The pilgrimage of the Churches of the European Union, from the Latin “Iter Europaeum,” includes stops at 28 churches and basilicas. All are historically linked to European countries for cultural, artistic reasons, or for a tradition of welcoming pilgrims from a particular European community state.

The pilgrimage “Patronesses of Europe and Doctors of the Church” aims to rediscover European female saints proclaimed by the Church as Patronesses of Europe and Doctors of the Church. Some significant churches in Rome, linked to these saints, were chosen for their symbolism or the presence of relics. Among these are Santa Brigida in Campo de’ Fiori, Santa Maria sopra Minerva with the body of St. Catherine of Siena, Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza for St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, and Santa Cecilia in Trastevere for Hildegard of Bingen. Additionally, Trinità dei Monti recalls St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and Santa Maria della Vittoria is associated with St. Teresa of Ávila.
